Lorie Suntree - Art is design and design is art. To understand design and art in STEM --Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics-- you first need to know the various design concepts and resources before a functional form can be created. In these classes students learn basics in each area and then are asked to design, test and redesign various projects through Engineering and Scientific Practices Get Energized Wednesdays 9am HSC Rancho Santa Margarita Watts Up? Can the sun really cook that food? How big is your footprint? Students will explore various energy possibilities, test appliances, build a light board, rebuild a lamp along with testing alternative energy to heat water and cook food. They will build a solar car and look at energy storage. This class is full of energy. Motion Commotion Wednesdays 10am HSC Rancho Santa Margarita and Wednesdays 2:10pm ILA Aliso Viejo Marbles run, pumpkins fly, cars propelled and creatures walk on their own. Gravity, tension, force, velocity and propulsion are the basis for this action packed class. This class, filled with energy and commotion, will establish the beginnings of Engineering practices and design. Astronomy and Mythology 1 and 2 Fridays 11pm HSC Rancho Santa Margarita Who named the constellations? Who are the early astronomers? How did they explore the skies? How did the constellation names become permanent? How were the stars used in navigation? With the answers to these questions, students will bridge astronomy with mythology. The sky is the limit in this class. Green, the Universal Color 1 and 2 --can be taken by semester or year-- Fridays 12pm HSC Rancho Santa Margarita What does recycle paper have in common with potatoes? Is all wool equal? What is the connection between Agriculture and Engineering? Everything we use has been engineered and it started with agriculture. Students will learn the basics and explore the advancements of mass production through engineering, invention and innovation -Costa Mesa, CA
